Physical Therapy (PT) Compact: An Overview

The Physical Therapy (PT) Compact is an agreement between participating states that allows physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) to practice across state lines without needing individual state licenses. This initiative simplifies the licensing process and supports PTs and PTAs in providing their services in areas where they are most needed.

PT Compact Privileges

When a PT or PTA holds PT Compact Privileges, they can practice in all states that are members of the compact, without applying for an additional license in each state. However, the license holder must comply with the practice laws of the state in which they are practicing.

Benefits of PT Compact Privileges:
– Greater mobility: PTs can practice in any participating state without the need for multiple state licenses.
– Improved access to care: The compact helps address workforce shortages, particularly in rural or underserved areas, by facilitating easier mobility for PT professionals.
– Cost-effective: PTs save money by avoiding the need to pay for multiple state licenses.
– Streamlined application process: Once a PT Compact Privilege is granted, PTs can start working almost immediately in a new state without waiting for state-by-state approval.

How to Get Started with PT Compact Privileges

1. Ensure Eligibility:
Before applying for PT Compact privileges, check if your state is a participant and if you meet eligibility requirements. You must be licensed in a compact-participating state and in good standing with your licensing authority.

2. Apply for Compact Privileges:
PTs and PTAs can apply for Compact privileges through the PT Compact Commission’s portal. The application typically involves providing proof of licensure, criminal background checks, and other documents required by the Compact.

3. Pay Fees:
There are typically fees associated with applying for and maintaining PT Compact privileges. These vary based on the number of states where you wish to practice.

4. Maintain Licensure in Your Home State:
While practicing in other states under the PT Compact, PTs must continue to maintain their primary state license (the state where they hold initial licensure).

5. Comply with State Laws:
Once granted PT Compact privileges, PTs and PTAs must comply with the laws and regulations of the state(s) in which they are practicing. These rules may include requirements for continuing education and reporting.
